Q1. In what ways does your media product use, develop, or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Whilst planning and shooting our music video “Time For This Light To Shine” trying to use the conventions of our acoustic genre whilst challenging them in certain aspects was important to us. This was to ensure our video had a unique style to it, but also staying within the generic conventions of this genre. We chose this particular song because we thought we could make a story from the meaning in the lyrics, and we all liked the genre of the music.
Our narrative for the music video challenges the normal conventions for an acoustic music video for reasons such as; the story uses the idea of a non-linear narrative using flashbacks. We felt this was a unique idea for our video and was hard to find when researching other music videos in this particular genre. We thought this would work because it puts an originality mark on our music video and does not always follow the general conventions. This can show our initiative towards making our video stand out, we also used this because it was once said by Kress that “Genre is like visiting a familiar social occasion” taking on board this quote our music video and my digipak tries to utilise this idea but challenging some norms at the same time whilst appealing to our ideal audience. This was important because we had an idea of personality factors and the age our demographic audience would have, such as their lifestyle and age. The use of flashbacks can be found in many films such as; Amadeus, the Usual Suspects, Casablanca and Once Upon a Time in America. Flashbacks can be popular in some comedy TV series such as How I Met Your Mother and My Name Is Earl this is where the story is set in the present about a man trying to make his life better by going back and fixing bad things he has done in the past - the flashbacks then show the story of the bad things he did and is then presently trying to fix. I do not know of many music videos that use flashbacks all the way through, although I have seen relationships that have burnt out showing how the relationship used to be using flashbacks, this was also common among class mates. But there is little evidence in the use of the acoustic genre. Although trying to make our music video memorable we also took into account Goodwin’s theory by having visuals that link to the lyrics.
A way in which we used the conventions of an acoustic genre was by having an entirely narrative based music video, this is more common in established artists music videos and in the pop genre, therefore it was considered as taking a risk for a new artist, but we think it worked with our video.
The use of our Mise- En-Scene in our music video challenges the conventions of a real acoustic music video because with the research I have done the acoustic genre locations are usually in sunny/beach location, for example in the music video for Jason Mraz – I’m yours or Jack Johnson – Upside Down. Or they are usually set at a gig singing live.
Our Mise-En-Scene was chosen to be in a beach setting at first we thought this would be effective because it can be seen in many music videos in this genre, such as in Jason Mraz – I’m yours and many of Jack Johnson’s music videos, until there were complications with filming at the beach, so we changed our location to a slightly more urban setting, this challenges the conventions because an inner city and a housing estate would not normally be used for an acoustic music video, although it goes against the conventions we still felt the locations fit in with our plot and goes with the music because of the way we have filmed the video, but again the use of a different location adds a unique stamp to our music video.
The actors we used may not go with the conventions of a music video in this genre but there was not a lot of choice involved in this. From my research most acoustic artists are in their twenties, where as myself and our other actor were only 18, this may not fit in perfectly with the genres general style but there is nothing to say that an 18 year old couldn’t be in this genre making music and we had to use the actors we could get hold of and that were trustworthy regardless of their age. The actors represented the youth in our video as insecure, isolated and experiencing loss because of an unstable relationship. These are contemporary issues, another way the younger generation are represented in the video is slightly more negative as drinking is shown in the video because of the way the boy feels which is depressed. Issues like this are shown in many TV soaps and popular TV dramas on television at the moment, in particular the teen soap Hollyoaks.
Regarding my magazine advertisement and Digipak/Album I think I use an effective digipak cover because I use a natural photograph to link with the natural theme of the song, as it is just a voice and a guitar, so the use of the artist playing his guitar alone with a natural setting around him links with the conventions of a real media product in this genre. The use of costume in my digipak was important because I wanted the artist to represent clothing that was showing he cared about the environment and the world around him as I think the natural acoustic genre can link to this. I chose a t-shirt that had natural elements written on them such as wind and water I think this would fall within the generic conventions of the acoustic genre. The choice of clothing is also important when trying to attract my target audience as the male role is dressed like the audience would dress to make the male more desirable and to create a relationship the audience can relate to when looking at the digipak or music video. I think my digipak can compare to album covers to artists such as Jason Mraz for the song I’m yours as the use of his sketch image of his own face on the front cover gives an authentic image that has not been edited again fitting in to the genre.

Q2. How effective is the combination of your main product with ancillary texts?

Digipak:

Front cover. Middle panel 1

Middle panel 2 Back cover

I combined the use of the visuals in my music video with my CD cover and magazine advertisement by using the artist/main character in the music video on the front cover and throughout most of my digi-pak. I did this because a prospective audience will focus on the image of the artist and be able to create a link between music and a person. I chose the artist to be playing the acoustic guitar in the digi-pak, my reasoning behind this was because the genre is acoustic and the guitar was an important instrument in the song and important in the way that the guitar shows how the artist plays acoustic music to attract its target audience. The recurring use of the guitar in the digi-pak supports Goodwin’s theory, in the way in which it supports and strengthens a media product. Three out of four of my panels include the artist to help enhance appeal for a new artist, also having the digi-pak simple makes the album more attractive to its target audience, because a close-up picture catches your attention and familiarises fans and your audience with the artists face. On the first panel the image is close up on the face, for the reason of establishing the artist with their music, the left middle panel is a low angle shot of the artist playing their music, this is effective because it can help appeal to the target audience, the lyrics are also on this panel I did this to make this many look more interesting and will help the audience enjoy the song more by being able to learn or become familiar with the words. The third panel again show the artist with their guitar but this time shows more of the body of the artist this is again for a visual link of the artist. The back panel is the only panel which does not include the artists face on, instead uses a scene from the music video I used this image because it can help the audience relate to the artist and link to the music video locations therefore strengthening the appeal by making it easy for the audience to make connections between the artist and places.

Magazine Advert:

For my magazine advertisement I also used an image of the artist. I chose this again so the audience can make connections between visuals and sound. I used an image using the whole body so the clothing of the artist could be noticed by a prospective audience in a magazine. The words wind, fire and earth on the t-shirt are important as they can link again to the acoustic genre. The natural elements of the earth and the natural sound of the song and instruments can be connected. The wording on the magazine advertisement suggest that the artist is up and coming by saying that the album is coming out and the comments from magazines also suggest this. Although the main appeal was to advertise the album release, I also chose to add in there was a tour ahead, this was to attract the audience to listening to the artist live and becoming a fan of the artist. Using websites on the magazine advert were useful to attracting interested target audience to check out the artist, and their music. I tried to use a natural background on my magazine advert to help connect and connote to the natural theme of the acoustic genre. The way the artist is showing he has his hands in his pockets shows his casual laid back approach which again will help the appeal to the target audience. I think my magazine advert would appear in magazines such as NME or Q as these don’t focus on necessarily one particular genre but a range of genres, also other acoustic artists such as Newton Faulkner has appeared in this magazine, showing it would be appropriate as he is also in the acoustic genre. As acoustic is a hard genre to place, I think these would be the most suited as to appealing and finding the target audience.

Q3. What have you learned from your audience feedback?

Music Video:

The most convenient way to receive audience feedback for our music video was to get our class to complete a questionnaire on aspects of the music video, we asked our entire Media Studies class in total, so had a range of males and females aged 17-18. Also as all of the participants were in our Media class they all had a general background knowledge in to what to be looking for and what makes a music video attractive therefore making our results slightly more valid, although there could have been a problem with reliability as the class could have easily lied. Our class is quite opinionated though, so we also knew we would gain a range and variety of results.

The first group of questions included rating certain aspects of our music videos using the numbers 1-5 (1 the lowest, 5 the highest). The first question was “How much did you enjoy the music video?” The average rating was three, with one five and two fours. Also one two. This shows a generally steady shared opinion from our class, with a few anomalies. This could have been because they specifically enjoyed the genre, or disliked the song, or the pace/style of the video. Especially as the acoustic genre is not as much of a widely popular or well known genre. The next question which was “Did the video hold you attention?” scored an average rating of three-four out of five. Interestingly males and females both scored roughly at the same. As one male and one female both scored a two. It is generally steady throughout all the research, this can show how the acoustic genre and the video successfully appeals to both genders. The next question was “How do you rate the camera work and editing?” the average score for this was four, this was pleasing as we tried really hard to create an interesting edit to make the shots as creative as possible, for example using the split screen. The last of this set of questions was How do you rate the standard of mise-en-scene?” Again the average scoring was four which was good because we tried really hard to create interesting angles and find the right mise-en-scene to fit the style we wanted to create for our video. It was also pleasing to have scores towards the higher end of the scale because this shows the non-linear narrative we used for our video was successful and the audience understood the idea and purpose of using this style. Although the video was about a love story I think the male protagonist helps the male audience to engage with the music video just as well as females, who can relate to the love side of the story the video tells because of female-based films that show love related stories such as the film ‘The Notebook’.

The next two questions were to be circled, question five was “Was the music video too short, long, don’t know or correct length?”. Everyone answered “correct length” I think this was because our video was the average length of a music video, this was important so we did not lose the audiences interest. The second of these two questions was “Would you listen to it again?” Most of the audience answered undecided, this was possibly because the acoustic genre is not widely popular, and also is not particular popular among our class, again another reason why just asking out class could not have been the most reliable way of collecting data.

The next group of questions were opinion based. “Were there any aspects you found offensive?” No one had an answer for this, as we tried to represent any aspect of our video in a negative or offensive way. This is why I don’t think anyone found anything offensive as we took this into consideration.
The next question was “Can you think of anything that could improve the appeal?” We had some answers including suggestions such as making the narrative more complex, increasing the pace of the video and improving some effects. These suggestions show that maybe my group and I could have taken into consideration a little more about our narrative and maybe how to make it faster paced and more exciting, but we also thought it fit in with the song we used.
For the question “Was there any part you found confusing or hard to understand?” No one answered that there was a part that was confusing, and that the narrative was easy to follow.
The last question in this group being “What is the best part of the production?” Had answers such as “The use of the recurring fire”, “use of the split screen”, “use of shots”, “the narrative of the video connecting to the lyrics in the song” and “it suited the genre”. This shows the audience had a varied opinion on what they enjoyed about our video and we were pleased as it shows that different aspects can appeal to different people.
The last 3 questions were again circling numbers or words. The first “Does the video reflect the style of the music?” All of our class answered ‘Yes’. This results shows our video did the job it was supposed to do and that we set out with good ideas.
The next question was “Does the video successfully promote the artist”? This produced some less pleasing results and most of the group answered No, or undecided. This made me realise we should have maybe not had the entire film as narrative based and could have used the male protagonist singing and performing or playing the music this could have helped the appeal and promotion of the video and artist.
The last question for our music video was “On a scale of one-five how do you rank the music video overall?” We got an average result of three - four with some nice comments such as “the video really related to the genre”. This shows that according to our media class we successfully created a music video that fitted its genre and appeals to a wide audience.

Digipak & magazine advertisement

For my digi-pak and magazine advertisement I chose to ask a small set of questions to similar participants as I did with my music video. Males and females aged 17-18, 5males 4females were used. The questions were as follows:

1. How well do you think the digi-pak and magazine advert represent and promote the artist? (on a scale of 1-5).

2. What do you think could have improved the digi-pak or magazine advert?

3. What is the best part of the digi-pak or magazine advert?

4. How interesting are the images on a scale of 1-5?

In terms of my digi-pak I had an average rating of 4 out of 5, this shows that using the artists face and body on the first album was successful in promoting and familiarising the artist with possible audiences. It also shows that uses images like mine promotes effectively. For the second question, I got comments such as “using a wider variety of location”, “changing the lighting to be different for each panel” & “more variety of clothing on the artist”. These comments show I could have taken pictures over different periods of days to get different lighting to maybe strengthen the interest of the panel, or I could have changed the costume of the artist to create variety in the digi-pak but overall I do not think these comments are too negative.
For question three I got comments such as “the use of the artist alone”, “the way the artist is playing his music”, “the way the images all connect”. This shows that my general idea of having a theme throughout my digi-pak can work, and that the use of the artist and the image being focussed on him attracts and appeals to an audience. The last question got me an average rating of 3. This shows I could have had more variety, but I do have a sound rating from the people I asked showing my images do work together.

Regarding my magazine advertisement the first question I received an average rating of 4, this shows my advert successfully promoted the up and coming album release and the artist because I used a full image. I also think my choice of wording helped to promote the artist. For the second question I had comments such as “less words, it is slightly crowded”, “the fonts could have been different and could have been in different colours” & “I think it could have been a more interesting advertisement”. This shows that I could have moved some of my information about to be at different angles to make the advertisement more interesting to read, but I also wanted it to be simple because if it is placed in a magazine it has to be simple to be eye catching and for someone to want to read the information. For question three I received comments such as “I like the simplicity”, “The use of the words going around the image of the artist” & “The way the advert stands out because it doesn’t have too little or too much on it”. These images show that the simplicity I was going for works well, whilst still promoting the album and artist successfully, keeping the image eye catching. For the last question I scored a 4 on average from the participants. I think this shows I had a very good and successfully magazine advert and did well on promoting the album, whilst keeping the advert simple to attract attention towards it, I also think the large image of the artist helps to attract an audience to stop and view the magazine advert.

Q4. How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

Planning:

Using a blog, from the site www.blogger.com was a huge part of the planning for the production of our music video and individual print productions. For our music video it was used to keep record of all the ideas, and revisions we made on our way towards constructing the video. This included keeping track of costume ideas, actors we were planning to use, location scouting, this was particularly useful for this aspects as photographs were easily put straight on to the blog, then when we were going to shoot and meet to start to pull our music video together. Regarding the digi-pak and magazine advertisement the blog was particularly helpful as it allowed you to upload your ideas simply and quickly so teachers can comment on first drafts with ideas for improvements, therefore helping us to make the work stronger. This also helped because not only could teachers comment and suggest, our friends and peers could do this also instantly by leaving a comment at the bottom of a post for individuals to read, this again helped when improving and strengthening work. The most helpful aspect of using the blog and every piece of work being done digitally is how you can easily access you work at home or at school. Whilst planning our music video I also used technology such as www.youtube.com to watch videos in the same genre as we were working within to help collect ideas, and how we could see what we would like to use or challenge whilst thinking about what to have in our video.

Construction:

Whilst in the making of our music video our group used a digital camcorder and a tripod that helped significantly whilst producing our video. This was because it was able to enable us to produce a variety of angles for the shots we were planning to use. It also helped to produce a steady video when wanted as it was not hand held, the last thing that it helped us do was to view and delete pieces of video we did not want, or did not think was relevant was our ideas, or did not work as we had planned.
Whilst editing the music video we used “Premiere Pro Elements” this programme enabled us to use effects and cross fades to make our music video interesting to the eye, and keep the audience’s attention on the video. It also helped by having the soundtrack and the video together so we knew what we wanted when on the track and to make sure it was in time with the music if it needed to be. We also were able to achieve more complex cross-fades and cuts with this editing software. Whilst editing we decided to use a split-screen, to make our visuals tell a story effectively. We also super imposed a picture into the video, so it looked like the person was in the video, even though they were not. And lastly the editing software helped us speed up and slow down certain shots to the pace of the music, this was effective whilst trying to create atmosphere in the video.
Regarding print productions I used the software Adobe Photoshop Elements, this enabled me to experiment and manipulate still images I took on my digital camera. I took about 50 pictures overall, and slowly went through my cameras picking the most suitable images to my ideas. For my magazine advert, I used the effect of making a textured background to make the view of the advert more interesting. I was also able to change the contrast and move font and text around on the image to manipulate the image, and then I was embed images on to the image in photoshop to create layers and make the final piece. This was also true for my digi-pak.

Research:

Gaining feedback for research was an important part of creating print productions and our music video, I used the method of posting questionnaires on the site Facebook and handing out questionnaires to my classmates. I chose to use social networking sites because they are increasingly popular among teens. They are also helpful because you can gain feedback quickly, and can ask a large number of people efficiently. Another way we used social networking sites was to listen to our unsigned band, this time on Myspace and you tube. We were lucky enough to know our artist though, therefore not needing to search many bands and ask permission as such to people we did not know. These ways of listening and finding artists/bands are important today as they not only are ways to find new bands but promote current bands and what they are doing and releasing in an easy and immediate way to access.

Evaluation:

In order to complete our coursework successfully the use of you tube has helped me to embed videos on to my blog, and the use of our blog to insert stills in to my blog for purposes such as comparing images, and videos. Also the use of being able to insert images onto my blog has made the blog and evaluation of my work more interesting and effective.

Back Cover Of Digipak

Here is the idea for the back panel of my digipak. I chose to use this image as it connotes the emptiness the artist feels left at the end of the music video. And the close up image gives a more interesting image for the audience to engage with. I thought the use of the black fire pit could also connote how the artist is feeling at the end of the music video. The leafy ground shows the location could have been left for a while, which could connote that the artist has not gone back there since the girl left him behind.

Digipak - Middle Panels

Below are the middle panels for my digipak.

This middle panel features the lyrics of the single for the music video, I used them because it is a good way for an audience who like the track to become familiar with it. The photograph I also liked because of the particular angle used I think is effective because it is a location that was used in the music video and featuring in the digipak gives the audience a place and recognisable feature to relate to. The image gives an impression that the artist likes to play at peace and alone to think about writing his music.

This image makes the artist look more fun and engaging that the other photos as he is making eye contact with the camera, giving the image that he is looking at his audience and engaging with his audience. I think the guitar in the photos are again connoting his love for music and the style of music he is writing and making. Again the contrast of the bright image and dark background fits in well with the title of the song and makes the image look simple but effective and fits in the with the theme of my digipak.

Digipak - Front Cover

Below is the front photograph of my Digipak for my artist.

Here I have decided to use a simple image of the artist showing his face well, again as this is helpful for new artists to be recognised and established. I used the bigger font for his name, as again this is good promotion for a new artist, and the title of the track along the guitar I used because it is the main instrument in the track and connotes the acoustic genre that my artist is. The simple image with nothing in the background make the artist stand out more than anything else in the image which again will be beneficial to a new artist as well as giving an interesting contrast of the bright face and dark background which can link to the title of the song 'Time For This Light To Shine". I also think the close up shows well the emotion he is displaying.

Final Submission of Magazine Advertisement

Above is my final magazine advertisement. I have chosen the advert to go in a magazine such as Q magazine or NME, this is because although they are mainly focused on indie/rock they have room for artists such as acoustic, and I do not know of any music magazine specifically focusing on this genre of music. I think this magazine advertisement is catchy and appealing because it has a large image of my artist on, and clearly states the important information for someone looking at the article to take in. The photograph of the artist is important for a new act for an audience to establish the music with a face and to increase the artists popularity, and appeals to those who have not seen the artists face before, but may have heard the name. The name of the artist is large so a name can be linked to the face as well as the music and this helps to increase a fan base too. The image is on a textured dark background with light text to create a contrast of light and dark but also because the text is easily readable like this and too many colours can make an advertisement busy, for this reason I stuck to a black background, white text and coloured image for a variety but also to keep simplicity and keep it easy to read. After the artists name the next piece of information is the album name and when it released, I think this was important because it is the most important part of advertising on the advert, I chose it to go underneath the name because it is instantly the next piece of information you look at. Overall I am pleased with the final magazine advertisement I have produced.

Second draft of magazine advertisement

Above is the second draft to my magazine advert. The changes I made were to promote the album an rearrange some wording and sizing. I think like this version more - but think it is over crowded so my last and final magazine advert will not have quite so much writing. I still think the general layout of my magazine advert is effective, which is why I kept my original idea.

Original photos taken for Magazine Advert

This image above I will use as my magazine advert to advertise a tour that my artist is doing. I chose a plain shot like this, with a clear image of the artist, again to make it easy for the audience to establish a name with a face, and a song. This is helpful to build a fan base because a new artist needs to be established with a face. I also think this image can be easily to manipulate with a coloured background and space for text and tour dates with comments from magazines in. I think my artists magazine advert would appear in such magazines as Q magazine and NME magazine.

First Draft Of Magazine Advert

This is the first draft of my magazine advert - I like the layout, image and style. But for my final, I would like to change the size of some of the font, the colour and move some of the font to a different place on the advert to make the writing more legible. I also wish to add a more specific location of a gig/concert of my artist on the tour dates to make the advert more detailed. The last thing I would like to add is a sentence advertising the album/digipak in the space that is left on the advertisement.
I chose to do my advert like this though, as it shows the face of the artist clearly and clearly advertises dates, website and the name of the artist with a textured background to make the image more interesting and appealing and also the choice of clothing on the artist fits in with the natural acoustic sound of the song with the words wind, water fire and earth being the natural things on the planet. I also think the background colour of the image will fit in with my digipak and the angle as a mid shot of the artist using the torso makes it easy to establish a face and body image of the artist and the name of the single/album is easily readable and clear for a audience who do not know the artist before seeing the advertisement.

Original photos taken for Digipak

The 3 images above are going to be my middle panels, although I will eventually change it to just 2, at the moment I think I am going to use the first and the last image, but I also like the middle as it shows an empty space, which links in to the emptiness the artist feels in the music video. I like the first image because it shows the artist doing what he loves which is playing his guitar and writing/singing his music - as with the front cover image. I also don't think these photographs will need too much manipulating because they are interesting as they are as their own unique photographs to show the artist. On the middle panels - I will write the song lyrics of songs that are displayed on the back cover.

Above is the image I will use for my front cover of my Digipak and I have explained my reasoning in a previous post.

- The back cover will be a shot of the artist and the girl he fell for in the music video and the sunlight shining on them together to link with the name of the single - Time For This Light To Shine. Some track names and a website advertisement will also be on the final back cover. Although I still need to upload this image.

Music And Media Investigation - Questionnaire

Firstly I am going to come up with a questionnaire that my peers and other people I ask can answer when watching the music videos I choose. I am going to try and make my results as reliable as possible by using a varied range of ages and gender, also those with a different favourite genre of music.

Below is the questionnaire I am going to use:

1. What is your favourite genre of music? Choose up to two genres but no more. Please tick.

Rock
Pop
Indie
Punk

Metal
Drum and Bass
Dubstep
Folk
Country
RnB
Hip Hop
House
Garage
Classical
Dance

2. How old are you? Please circle.

0-10, 11-15, -16-20, 21-25, 26-30, 30-35, 36-40, 41-45, 46+

3. Are you:

Male

6. Do you think women are represented in a bad way in most RnB/Pop music videos? Please tick.

Yes
No

7. If so, why? Please tick.

So they are a sex symbol
To attract a male audience as well as a female audience
To attract a young audience
Because this is normal
Other..............................................................................................................

8. So do you think women are represented in the same bad way in most Rock/Metal videos? Please tick.

Yes
No

9. Why? Please tick and write your own opinion.

Because this genre has more respect towards women
Because it does not fit in with the style of music
The song lyrics are not about women in a sexual way
Other ...............................................................................................................

10. Do you think a RnB/Pop video that is not recent represents women differently to this genre currently? Please tick.

Yes
No

11. If yes, why do you think this has changed over time? Please tick, and write your own opinion.

Because it has come more acceptable for women to not wear as many clothes
Because the younger generation are more allowed to see women represented in this way
Because it is okay for women to do this now - free choice
Because the increase in use of technology has made music videos more interesting as they are more accessible.

Location Scouting - Revised

Below are a list of shots that will/might be used in our music video and why we might use them.

This fire pit and stool will be used for a shot in our video as it will be used to place the fire as a link between the song lyrics and the artists feelings about the girl. I think the fire will represent the burning pain he feels for the loss of the girl.

Secondly the beds are going to be used for a scene in the video when the couple are both on the telephone to each other, it connotes a relaxed setting that they are both at ease lying down talking to each other - and also that they are inseperable and do not want to be apart because they are in love. This scene will be used as part of a flashback of before they split up, so this part of the video needs to make them look happy.

The wood swing will be used for a flashback for happier times, we decided to use this as a location as it is a romantic setting for the lovers to be and we thought it was quite original. This location will be good for our narrative as a romantic theme. It shows the couple enjoying each others company and nothing else which will also help connote a loving atmosphere in the music video.

Digipak Initial Ideas

As Guy was reliable for our music video, and he was the lead male role. I decided to use him for my digpak as the artist. My first thoughts were to use him on the swing where he is in our music video with the girl. I decided to take some shots/photographs of this at different angles as I thought that it tied in well with the music video as he might be playing his guitar/singing where they used to be together to remind him of their times together. Here are some of the shots I took. And one I am going to use possibly for my front cover.

I have decided the last photograph above would be best and a good idea for a front cover, my reasoning behind this is that you can see his face clearly - this is good for a new artist as it gives the audience a face to link the voice to, although some of the others show his face well, I think in this one the angle of the picture is effective as it is from up above and a close up so his facial expression can be seen in detail as it shows emotion. I also think the fact that he is bright with a dark background gives contrast and fits in with the song title 'Time For This Light To Shine' as he is bright in the darkness. It also connotes how he would be singing when no one is around about his feelings, which adds an element of emotion to the cover. The fact he has a guitar in his hand also helps to connote the acoustic vibe that the song is, especially as the guitar is acoustic and is the main instrument played in our song. Although I will have to rethink where I am going to put the title and his name on the cover. I think to make the album cover look simple, but effective I will add his name in the top left hand corner and the title of the song along the bottom. In a font that reflects the song, such as a yellow font that looks like it is shining. I am going to edit this shot until I am happy with the positioning of the font and the lighting - so it can be my album cover.

Treatment of music video - Revised

Although it is still the same track and artist as shown on the other treatment, some of the ideas have changed.

Outline of ideas:
Filmed in varying locations- river/house/car/outside natural settings/city centre
2 lovers

Resources we will need:
2 actors
mobile phones
firewood
photographs of the couple
hipflask/alcohol
car
house

Justification of ideas in relation to genre and artist:
The acoustic music compliments the two ideas of lovers as the lyrics relate to a love story and the idea of the light in the lyrics being a spark between lovers and fitting in with the light from the fire.

Music Video Analysis

Jason Mraz - I’m Yours

This music video can be found on Jason Mrazs’ website, but not on you tube.

The song I’m Yours is about giving into love and life and the music video reflects this. The video does conform with the conventions of an acoustic artist, for example the clothes that are worn and the locations the video is shot in. The clothes are baggy, casual and have a beach-look to them, this shows a laid back feel to the style of music and the video. The locations are mainly on beaches, or on cliffs showing freedom and natural beauty of settings and scenery for example a close up shot of a puddle on the ground and him stepping in it, or a flower blowing in the wind with a high angle shot from the ground of him singing sitting next to it, or the establishing shots of the landscape to show the vastness of the setting and the freedom it represents. A shot of him and some friends jumping into a river from the top of a waterfall/cliff shows him letting all his inhibitions go and being free. The setting of his home in this video and the way he travels in the video is generally not an upper class or rich way to travel, and he lives in a block of flats and travels in the back of trucks and on buses, this differs from music videos within the genre of RnB for example where limos and private jets may be used as a form of travel in this genre. The director may have done this for appeal to fans because it uses conventions that are familiar and that audiences know goes with the genre of the song. I also think the album cover, as shown above fits in the with genre of this song and video as it is simple, but effective and stands out as it does not look like your everyday album cover because the self portrait is an interesting way to portray yourself on your album.

The video is narrative and performance based. Although Jason is singing the lyrics throughout the video it is mainly narrative based apart from one shot with him singing and playing the guitar as a performer. The narrative structure in this video is mainly linear. This type of narrative structure is appealing because it is telling a story and grips you throughout to find out the ending. The lyrics and the visuals in this song link because the images are about freedom and being with the people you love and living life, and the lyrics in this song relate to this, for example “but I wont hesitate no more, no more. It cannot wait, I’m yours” or “open up your mind and see like me, open up your plans and damn you’re free look into your heart and you’ll find love love love, listen to the music of the moment people dance and sing, we’re just one big family and it’s our god forsaken right to be loved”. these lyrics show the feeling of him as wanting to be free and love/be loved, which is a convention of the genre as it has a laid back theme of only singing about feelings and not wanting to be rich or famous in genres such as hip hop.

The video cuts to beat at the beginning by changing shot in time with the acoustic guitar changing chords/notes. There is a focus on the guitar instrument as this is generally the only instrument played and is constantly played throughout the song. The shots generally stay in time to the music throughout the video.
The editing in this video is fairly quick as the video never really focuses on one shot, I think this is to keep you intrigued as to exactly what it is in the shot, as there are also many close up in this video. There are no special effects or CGI’s in the video as the song is about being free and is all set in a natural location rather then a stage set so this would not be in keeping with the theme and I think this is why they were not used.

The lyrics music video relates to other music in this genre such as “Better together - Jack Johnson”. Some of the settings in the music video “Wasting Time - Jack Johnson” are similar to those of Jason Mraz, for example travelling in the back of a truck and being on the beach, with your acoustic guitar playing and singing. Although there is no video very similar to this, there are plenty of aspects from this video used in other videos in this genre, especially by the artist Jack Johnson. Jack Johnson and Jason Mraz are also similar about their lyrics as they both often involve lyrics about love/relationships, and freedom. This adds to the appeal of this video because if other artists in this genre are like this, it is likely the same kind of audience will like your song and the video that goes with it.

The representation of the locations in this video are recognisable and realistic to some, and in my opinion exciting and unpredictable. But I do not think the life showed in this video is safe or stable. The world shown is a working class world which maybe shows a slight vulnerability of the character and his life.

Audience Research Evaluation and Analysis.

For my questionnaire, the demographic was ages 16-20 in both males and females, generally all in college or sixth form, and I asked 15 people the questionnaire. The aim of my questionnaire was to find out what my target audience was interested in, to help decide what do for the music video, and digipaks.

I asked 8 males and 7 females my questionnaire.
Below are the results of my questionnaire that i decided to analyse, i decided to focus on the questions that a specific to the making of my music video and digipak covers, the other questions were purely for interest into consuming and to see how my demograpic consumed the media/music.

I am starting at question 4, as i have already said the ages, genders and that they are in college or sixth form.

Question 4 -

The two most popular genres were indie and dubstep, this was interesting because it included 5 males and one female vote over the 2 genres. The genre 'acoustic' which is the same genre as our song, only got one vote, but was from a male, this fit my thought that it was a slightly more male based genre over females, the results show that my chosen demographic like to listen to a range of music genres. The dance, drum and bass, dubstep and hip hop being fairly popular fits in with the demographic as 16-20 is the age you start going to parties, or start going clubbing, and as these types of places play this type of music - it is likely that it will be a popular genre. The indie genre is a popular genre as this type of music is popular at festivals such as latitude, i attended this festival this year and the audiences at the indie performances were in my demographic, young teenagers and were the busiest performances that I saw.

Question 5 -

The most popular way of purchasing music was through internet downloads (8/15), closely followed by CD's(5/15) . This shows that CD's are still popular when purchasing music, so you have a hard copy and so you can see the artist you are buying, and learn a little about their style. I thought this was important to know that CD's are still popular as we have to design our own album covers, therefore being a key piece of knowledge when planning our own covers.

Question 9 -

The way my demographic most listened to music was on their mp3/4 (5/15) but surprisingly second to this was joint radio and tv/music channels (4/15). Most of the people i asked said that when they were working for college they would have a music channel on in the background to discover music they liked, or to watch the video to songs that came on that they enjoyed listening to. This shows that music videos are still popular and are enjoyed by consumers of the song. I also think that music videos are still important as at latitude when bands were playing some stages had the music video showing at the same time, for certain songs. To promote the song, and/or download of the music video with the song as you can now do this on iTunes.

Question 11 -

Word of mouth and the internet were the most popular way (9/15) to find out about unsigned bands/artists, and surprisingly TV was one of the least popular ways. This is good, as we have to make our own advertisement for a magazine that would fit the genre of our music video. Knowing that it is popular helps find inspiration and interest into this way of advertising. This result also shows an active audience for the music, rather than a passive audiences waiting to hear about new acts, but seeking them out.

Question 13 -

2-4 times a week was the most often my demographic watched to music videos, no one watched them over 5 times a weeks and 5 people said once a week, therefore 10 said 2-4 times. This proves that music videos are still popular, and are still important to go with a popular, or up and coming single. Furthermore shows that a good music video will boost the popularity of a song. Out of the 5 people who said once a week, one 1 was female, this shows that maybe women prefer the visual side to music, more so than men.

Question 14 -

"Would you ever buy music magazines or visit bands websites to check on upcoming events and for interviews/info about the band/artist?"

All but 2 interviewees answered yes to this question, this again shows an active audience, seeking out promos and gig dates etc. A couple of the reasons for why were to find out whether they were playing a gig nearby, or to find out whether they had any more music coming out soon. This is proving that adverts and websites are an effective way of promoting band information as they are popularly found and read by fans.

Question 16 -

"In your own opinion do you think the looks and the way the artists/actors look in a music video is important?"

10/15 answered that looks in not important but 5/15 said it is. I agree that on some levels that it is important as they people in the music video have to fit in with the style of the song and have to be dressed and in the right locations to match the song, or be relevant. There are more and more ways of viewing videos because of rising technology so the correct look and style should be included in the music video. In this question more females than males said it is more important that the look is right, this may be because in general females are more concerned about their image than men, although i think this stereotype is decreasing as men are increasingly caring about their appearance. I think this result will help us to style our actors and use the appropriate locations for our music video, to make sure the look the the video and the people in the video fits.

Question 17 -

9 out of 15 answered important, this shows that an audience like a music video that they can relate to the lyrics in the song, and that the narrative in the video matches the song, or that it tells the story so that the lyrics can make sense. This shows that the audience like to relate the video and lyrics to their own personal lives. This is good because our own music video will have a story that we think relates very well to the lyrics of the song, that clearly is important when planning to make a music video. This again also shows how an audience has an active mind about making connections and relations. 4 were male, and 5 were female out of the people who answered that it was important, this shows that in general men and women both like narratives that relate to the lyrics.

Evaluation of Methodology -

I think my collection 0f data is reliable and valid because my sample size is fairly big and are all in my target demographic

Analysis of magazine advert.

I think this magazine advert successfully promotes the artist, as it uses the artists body and face to relate the music to a person, and the angle of the shot is effective as the high angle shows the whole of the artists body, and the clothes he is wearing connotes a young fashion sense and seems to fit in with the 'indie' genre.

The white background with the bold purple writing and scribbles is effective as it gives off a young vibe, appealing to it's young target audience. This advert would stand out in a magazine because of the big picture of the artist and the bold 3D font, it also advertises where you could purchase the music - at hmv, this will encourage interest and encourage people to go and buy the music that is being advertised.

The four stars that are large - much larger than the comments. This is because the large stars will attract people to thinking the music is good. As 4 out of 5 stars is good, people who come across the advert will be intrigued into listening to the music because of other peoples opinions on it, especially as the stars are given by popular music magazines.

Magazine Advertisement Analysis

This advert is again for Jason Mraz, the advertisement stands out because of the bold black writing on top of the faded out photograph underneath, the photograph is of Jason Mraz and his musicians, but does not advertise himself all that well. Although the location and his name is promoting with the writing and as his name is the first thing on the advertisement it would catch your eye if in a magazine.

The advertisement also promotes the new album, and the mise en scene and contrasts makes the advert work well, this advert would be in music magazines such as NME. The fact the advertisement lets you know the album is available to download, this is used to encourage fans, or people who want to find out more to download the album, or singles and make money.
The photo in the background shows the excitement and fun that he is having with his friends, this connotes that if you went to one of his shows/gigs then you would have fun like this, also enticing the audience.

In conclusion i think this advert would work well in the right magazine as it effectively catches your eye with the font and information, even without a defining photograph.

Ideas and influences for digipak cover

Although this type of music is not in the same genre as my song. This album cover would be good for promoting a new artist as it is a close-up effective shot of the artist, that is eye catching and familiarizes fans with her face. She is made to look seductive and her hair and features are all done up to possibly appeal to males in this way, her lips are slightly apart which is to appear in a sexy way. This type of picture would be that for a mainstream audience, and could appear in 'glossy' magazines such as 'glamour'.

Although the album cover is simple, the use of not having a complicated mise en scene makes the cover attractive and appeals to it's target audience. The names of the artist and album cover do not stand out particularly in this cover, this is because Beyonce is an established artist and just her face will catch attention and then fans can read the name of the album, unlike the Jason Mraz cover where the names need to be shown clearly, as his album was new and he was a new artist.

Influences and researching for digipack covers

When researching digipak covers I found this album cover of Jason Mraz, I focussed on this, as this album cover is in the same genre as our song, and this album cover is used because Jason Mraz at the time was a new artist, so the cover has only him on the front to promote himself, and for the audience to know who he is. This album successfully promotes a new artist.
As we could not use the real artist for our album cover, I decided to use the main male protagonist as the artist for my digipak cover.

This album cover focusses solely on the artist, as the background lockers are blurred, and he is only in focus. This is because the artist wants you to look at him, rather than the background, to promote himself. He is also sitting at a school desk concentrating on something other than work, this may connote that he is bored of life, or the 'normal' life, and wants to do something different with his life, or that his music is different and new.

The font of the name of the album and artist, look hand written and in pencil, this fits in with the theme of going against conventions and using an alternative and unique style as it is his own hand writing.

The bright lighting at the end of the corridor behind his head makes his body and figure stand out, this contrast is strong with the dark body and bright lights. The camera angle is a simple mid shot but is effective as he is what stands out in the shot, and nothing else catches your attention first. This type of image would not necessarily be advertising to a mainstream audience but would possibly be in magazines such a NME or Q.
